Uncertain; several possibilities exist. Probably ultimately from Latin findere, through an alteration of its past participle fissus into a form *fictus > *fectus. (Compare the change from fixus to fitto). An alternative may be a Vulgar Latin *offetta (“little piece”), diminutive of offa.
