Lifashian

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂ṓws, which has become the word for "ear" in other Indo-European languages. This is one of the few words that has been used to date the Lifashian split from PIE after the Anatolian branch but before all others, as the root *h₂ew- "to see, to perceive" which came to mean "to hear" across IE underwent a logically similar but different semantic shift in Lifashian, cf. húámi "I touch"; see also barman "ear", showing the root for "to take".

Cognate with English ear, Latin auris, Russian ухо, all meaning "ear".
