Old Ponish was a Germanic language which was spoken in what is now Equestria. It is the oldest-recorded ersion of the Ponish language.

Old Ponish developed from a set of Anglo-Frisian dialacts spoken by the Germanic tribes

Etymology

Eohwisċ, means 'pertaining to the ponies', the name comes from the Proto-West-Germanic word *ehw, from earlier Proto-Germanic *ehwaz.

History

In-universe

Out-of-character

Old Ponish forst appeared in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic in the episode Uncommon Bond. Its next appearence was in the season 7 finale Shadow Play: Part 1. It is modeled off Old English. On 5 May 2024, The Ramosian made a more complete version with more Germanic grammar

Sample texts

Canon appearences

Note that due to the script writers being uneducated in Old English, Germanic languages, or linguistics in general, these are grammatically incorrect in The Ramosian's version

Hliet foresettan pliht![1]
Hearg sylfum se Ponhenge
Toward dol grimliċ of[2] Fola Firgenbeorg
ūser endemest sċield

Reward prefers risk!
The Temple of Ponhenge
At the base of Foal Mountain
Our last stand

English
The Mare in the Moon,
myth from olden pony times.

A powerful pony who wanted to rule Equestria, defeated by the Elements of Harmony and imprisoned in the moon.
Legend has it that on the longest day of the thousandth year,
the stars will aid in her escape,
and she will bring about nighttime eternal

  1. ^ Note Sunburst says "It's an Olde Ponish saying. 'Reward prefers risk!' Uh, it loses something in the translation." Sayings can be grammatically incorrect, like "long time no see"
  2. ^ Questionable use of 'of', since the use of the word as the genitive particle in Modern English comes from French (like de l'homme)
