From Old Tefrian dššrḥ (/t(e)ššŭraḥ/), from /*teššŭr/ + -ḥ (/-(a)ḥ/). The former component is from Proto-Tephricheic *Ateššūr, from *ate- + Akkadian 𒀭𒊹 (Aššūr). For the latter component, see ـح.
