A mixed-stem noun with roots ''*száw, szä́w'' would be expected, however after centuries of use as a pluralia tantum, the singular was reanalysed as a soft stem by analogy with the plural when it was revived for use in the names of particular seas, e.g. ''Mézszew'' ("Mediterranean Sea").
